ACM has named Frances E. Allen the
recipient of the 2006 A.M. Turing Award for "pioneering contributions to
the theory and practice of optimizing compiler techniques that laid the
foundation for modern optimizing compilers and automatic parallel
execution." This award marks the first time that a woman has received
this honor.
Allen, an IBM Fellow Emerita at the T.J.
Watson Research Center, made fundamental contributions to the theory and
practice of program optimization and greatly extended earlier work in
automatic program parallelization. Her contributions have enabled
high-performance solutions to a wide range of computationally intense
problems.
The Turing Award, first presented in 1966,
and named for British mathematician Alan M. Turing, is widely considered
the "Nobel Prize in Computing." It carries a $100,000 prize, with
financial support provided by Intel Corporation.
Download and listen to an interview with
Stanford University President John Hennessy on the impact of Fran
Allen's work and her role in inspiring others, being aired by American
Public Media's "Future Tense" on select public radio stations:
